Price romps home to win inaugural Royal Welsh Trail Title

Welsh international track star Ffion Price turned her Sunday morning training run into a winning performance as she won the inaugural Royal Welsh Trail Running Festival half-marathon race at the Royal Welsh Showground.

Price, who will be turning her attentions to the track and 1500 metres next month, joined Jason Scanlon (Pontypridd Roadents) and Tim Davies (Brecon AC) in completing the first lap, before falling back to finish fourth overall on the second.

“It was a tough run with the hills, but a great work-out. I usually do my long run each week on a Sunday and so having this event on my doorstep was fantastic,” said the 20-year-old Price, from Brecon.

More than 300 runners from all over Wales converged on the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells to take part in the running festival, which was at the heart of the showground’s two-day Spring Festival.

The sporting festival started with a 600 metre ‘Toddlers Trail Race’. That was followed by a 3 kilometre ‘Family Fun Run’, with the half-marathon event being combined with a 10 kilometre race.

Scanlon went on to win the half-marathon in 1 hours, 24 min, 59 sec with Davies taking second and Sam Moyglothling third. Price took the women’s title in fourth place overall in a time of 1:32.01, with Angela Jones second and Amy Sole third.

The chief executive of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, Steve Hughson, and his deputy, Aled Jones, both took part in the 10K race, with Davies leading home his boss.

“It was a great race and the event as a whole was a huge success on its debut. The atmosphere was fantastic and I think we’ve really got something to build on for the future in partnership with Run4Wales,” said Hughson.

“The course was terrific, with some great views from up on top of the hill climbs, and there was something for everyone to get involved in with the range of races.”

Swansea Harriers veteran Ifan Lloyd won the 10k race by more than two minutes from Mark Horsman, while Carmarthen Harriers’ Sharon Leech was the first women to finish.

The event was organised by RWAS and Run 4 Wales, the organisation behind the Cardiff Half Marathon, with water for runners being supplied by local firm Radnor Hills.
